Melbourne, January 23 – Leading trainer Peter Snowden is never afraid to switch horses between Sydney and Melbourne and did so on Saturday with Encosta de Lago mare Margham, who bounced back to her best form to win at Sandown.
A smart mare on her day Margham had shown little in three runs back from a spell in Sydney so was sent to Melbourne for the open mares event over 1300 metres which proved far more to her liking.
“She has been a victim of circumstances every run this time as she needs to get to the outside and find clear running,” explained Stable Foreman, Paul Snowden.
Margham went forward for Craig Williams and settled just off the lead before letting down with a good burst in the straight.
Despite veering out sharply when struck with the whip after Williams switched to the left hand, Margham had the race in her keeping and still scored by a length.
“We’ll assess her after today and see what races are coming up, but I think she’ll stay down here,” Snowden added.
Bred by Mike O’Donnell of Fairhill Farm, Margham was consigned by Yarraman on his behalf to the 2007 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale where she was bought by Woodlands Stud for $700,000.
Margham has won four races and placed five times from 17 starts earning $247,880 and will no doubt be seeking some Black Type during the autumn.
Margham is the fourth foal of stakes-placed Desert End (USA), a half-sister to stakes-winner Royal Med (USA), the dam of classy Kiwi Group Two winner Millennium.
