Melbourne, May 26 – A $160,000 purchase from the Yarraman Park draft at the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, talented three year-old filly Soft Sand booked herself a Group I date during Brisbane’s winter carnival after a last-to-first victory in the open fillies and mares sprint at Caulfield on Saturday.
Taking on older horses at her first run since finishing fifth in the Group II VRC Kewney Stakes back in March, Soft Sand (pictured courtesy Racepix Vic) produced her trademark sizzling turn of foot to storm home and win the 1100 metre dash by the best part of a length.
Trainer Colin Little told TVN the daughter of Dansili could make a pit stop in Sydney before a tilt at the Group I Tattersalls Tiara atEagle Farm on June 23.
“We need one more run before her ‘Melbourne Cup’, the (Group I) Tattersalls Tiara (1400m) in Queensland,” Little said.
“We could even go via Sydney because I’m pretty keen to give her one run the Sydney way of going before the Tiara.”
Soft Sand has the overall record now of four wins and two placings from seven starts with prizemoney of $200,000.
Imported in utero, Soft Sand is the first foal of the Rahy mare Mizzle (USA), a three-quarter sister to Group III Newmarket July Cup winner City On a Hill from Group I winner Loving Claim.
The current yearling from Mizzle, a filly by Hard Spun fetched $135,000 at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
Mizzle has a weanling filly to follow by Nicconi and is due to foal to Yarraman Park’s exciting young sire Hinchinbrook this spring.
