Brisbane, January 23 – Talented mare Plain Magic became the seventh individual stakes-winner for Magic Albert when she repelled all challengers to win the Listed QTC Nudgee Quality at Eagle Farm on Saturday
The form from the recent Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Handicap at the Gold Coast came to the fore with Plain Magic and Kryptelon fighting out the finish of this Listed event for mares after the favourite Chakvedatze waved the white flag shortly after turning for home.
Raced by Racetree’s Kevin Dixon, Plain Magic made it three straight wins when she rallied strongly to post her first Black Type success in scoring by a short half head in the 1200 metre dash.
Trainer Kelly Schweida was thrilled with the win and is now eyeing Winter Carnival features with his classy Magic Albert mare.
"She’s always shown us something," Schweida reported. "From day one she’s showed us ability."
"I said to the owner this goes good, but she’s very plain and that is how she got her name."
"Her last three wins have been good. She’s been racing in good quality races."
Schweida described today’s win as "very gutsy" and said a race like the Group One Winter Stakes would be her aim in around four months time, although Plain Magic would probably run in two weeks time in a similar event before contesting the Silk Stocking.
Plain Magic was purchased for $19,000 from the draft of Sellwood Holdings at the 2007 Magic Millions Premier Yearling Sale and has the overall record of six wins and three placings from 14 starts with prizemoney of $341,950.
A half sister to the Melbourne winner Mistry, Plain Magic is from the twice Sydney winner Glow Misty for Me.
A daughter of Forest Glow (USA), Glow Misty for Me is from stakes-placed Misty Power, who haoils from the family of Group Two Western Australian Guineas winner River Mist as well as Group One winning sprinter Notoire and Magic Millions 3YO Trophy winner Tempest Tost.
Also flying the flag for Magic Albert on Saturday was the Grahame Begg trained two year-old Ilovethiscity, who ran a gallant second to flying filly Chance Bye in the $250,000 Inglis Classic at Rosehill.
With two seconds from two starts, Ilovethiscity is showing great potential and must surely find a race with his name on it in coming weeks.
