Sydney, April 25 – Randwick trained David Payne has had a great season with his juveniles and added another winner to his tally at Randwick on Wednesday when Catbird filly Sequinella made light of the heavy conditions to score a good win the restricted fillies event over 1300 metres.
Ridden a clever race by three kilo claiming apprentice Simon Miller, Sequinella settled back in the field before finishing hard up along the fence to win by more than a length.
“She’s taken some time to get going, but it was a good effort today and we’ll probably keep her in work and look for a similar race,” said Payne, who purchased Sequinella for just $33,000 at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale last year.
Bred and offered for sale by Goodwood Farm, Sequinella is the second foal of the Clay Hero mare Red Sequin, an unraced full sister to stakes-winner Czar Hero and half-sister to the dam of champion NZ two year-old Maroofity.
Sequinella is one of five juvenile winners this season for Golden Slipper winner Catbird, whose fee for 2007 has been set at $22,000.
