Yarraman Park based Hinchinbrook sired his second stakes-winner of the Flemington Carnival when his progressive three year-old daughter Spright landed the Group III VRC Crown Resorts Stakes on Oaks Day.

The Garry Frazer trained filly was favourite in the big field of 18 runners on the strength of her brilliant last start win over the colts at Randwick in the Listed ATC Sir Brian Crowley Stakes. She ran right up to expectation with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle, surging home from back in the field to win the 1200 metre sprint by more than a length over another Hinchinbrook filly in Super Too. “She’s so genuine,” McEvoy said. “All she wants to do is gallop for you. “She can quicken up as well. She just absorbed the pressure there back in the ruck.

“I must admit halfway I was sort of worried where I was going to go but it opened up, I got to the outside and once she picked up I knew I had them covered about a furlong out.” Spright was a $100,000 Inglis Premier II purchase from the Grange Thoroughbreds draft making her the highest priced filly sold in that part of the sale and has already won over $330,000 in prizemoney with three wins from eight starts. “She’s a very good filly,” Frazer said. “When we won the Brian Crowley we thought we’d come down and have a go at the fillies race. “I was a little bit concerned about never being down the straight but anyway we had the right pilot aboard, which helped.” Frazer’s patience with Spright is paying dividends, as she was spelled after going winless from four starts as a two-year-old. “She put on about 40 kilos and grew almost a hand in height,” Frazer said. “She’s always been a very nice filly. A bit immature last time in but she’ll get better. She’ll be a better filly next time in.” Spright was a successful pinhook having been bought as a weanling by Gary Mudgway for just $12,000 at the Inglis Select Weanling Sale. A half-sister to Group III placed Mine Two, Spright is the third winner from Dashoff, who comes from the family of Group I winner Ideal Planet.

Dashoff has been a regular partner for Savabeel’s half-brother Arlington in recent years. Spright runs for a syndicate that includes members of the White family in whose colours she runs. They have been carried by superstars such as Marscay, Triscay, Yippyio, Eremein and Filante, so Spright has some big shoes to fill.
