February 19 – Golden Slipper winner Catbird posted a metropolitan double on Saturday with an ultra impressive win at Eagle Farm for Rumbird and a Cheltenham success in Adelaide for three year-old filly Fellina.
The Gerald Ryan trained Rumbird powered away over the concluding stages of the 1600 metre Class Six event, surging clear of Lonhro’s brother Spikes to win by more than three lengths.
Purchased by Ryan for $66,000 at the 2004 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Rumbird has won three races and placed nine times from 20 starts earning $129,050 for his large group of owners.
Stakes-placed during the Brisbane winter carnival last year and beaten only a little over two lengths when fifth in the Group Two QTC Queensland Guineas, Rumbird will be worth following now that he’s struck winning form.
Bred and offered for sale by John Morrissey’s Retreat Farm, Rumbird is the seventh and final foal of the good producer Rummy who passed away in 2004.
Catbird is enjoying a terrific season to date with over 50 individual winners and progeny earnings of just on $2million highlighted by stakes performers Catechuchu, Coincidental, Cateclipse, Diego Garcia, Mimidae and Green Birdie who has been transferred to Hong Kong where he has joined the stable of Caspar Fownes.
Catbird has just three yearlings catalogued for the Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale starting on Monday, then six for the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne and one for the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
