Melbourne, May 16 – Improving Catbird filly Miss Meerkat showed plenty of fight to post her second win from four starts at Sandown on Wednesday.
The Lee Freedman trained juvenile jumped swiftly and was always prominent before holding off a late challenge from Contessa’s Choice to win by half a head, carving out the 1000 metre journey in the slick time of 57.37 seconds.
Miss Meerkat was purchased by Slade Bloodstock for $140,000 at the NZB Premier Yearling Sale, the filly offered by Lyndhurst Farm on behalf of Yarraman Park.
Bred by Yarraman, Miss Meerkat is the second foal and second winner for the Kingmambo mare Sakhalin (USA), whose first foal Muzzio (also by Catbird) won at Doomben on May 2.
A winning daughter of US Group Two winner Special Happening, Sakhalin (USA) produced a yearling colt by Redoute’s Choice that made $700,000 to the bid of Tim Martin Bloodstock at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and her weanling colt is a full brother Miss Meerkat and Muzzio.
Miss Meerkat is one of six juvenile winners this season for Golden Slipper winner Catbird who is enjoying his usual great results with close to 80 individual winners and earnings in excess of $2.7 million.
Catbird has nine yearlings and five weanlings catalogued for the Magic Millions National Sales and features as the covering sire on six broodmares.
