Melbourne, December 5 – At the Sandown meeting on Wednesday, the restricted mares event over 1000 metres was won by the David Hayes trained Jakana, a $120,000 purchase for Griffiths Trading from the Yarraman Park draft at the 2005 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
Having her first start following a spell of 33 weeks, Jakana raced near the tail of the field before unleashing a big finish to get past the favourite Asshewaqua to score by a long neck.
Jakana has now won two races and placed three times from eight starts and looks set for a good campaign.
By prolific winner getter Commands, Jakana is the fourth foal of the Marauding mare Heister, a daughter of Group Three winner Explicit and half-sister to the dam of the stakes-winner Shouq.
Jakana continues the good run of success being enjoyed by Yarraman Park sold yearlings with the Mitchell family run stud set to offer some sensational drafts in 2008 at both Magic Millions and Inglis sales.
