Champion jockey James McDonald went to Wyong on Sunday for one ride and I Am Invincible colt Steel Will won by six lengths… exciting!
Trained by Chris Waller, the Go Bloodstock (Sir Owen Glenn) homebred colt Steel Will had two starts during the autumn for a third to expensive colt The Next Episode in a midweek maiden and then a seventh in the Group III ATC Kindergarten Stakes to Blue Door with The Next Episode second in that race.
Steel Will has had two trials this prep for two wins and was dropped into a 1100m maiden with his confidence sky high.
Ridden like the best horse in the race he worked forward to sit outside the leader and exploded after turning for home to quickly put six lengths on his rivals.
“They’ve always had a nice opinion of him and Chris has loved him from day dot,” said James McDonald.
“He’s always promised to deliver a performance like that and even though we are here on a Sunday it’s a lovely stepping stone and he will build good confidence from it and it’s good to win a race for Sir Owen (Glenn), it will put a smile on his face.
“He’s a gorgeous horse and I’m sure he’s in for a really good spring.”
Steel Will is a colt with a big pedigree as a half-brother to dual Group I winner September Ruin, Group III winner Steel City and stakes-placed Steel Strike, who won at Rosehill on Saturday.
He is the fifth winner from five foals to race from Group III winning Street Cry (IRE) mare Pittsburgh Flyer.
Steel Will looks a bright prospect for Yarraman Park’s champion sire I Am Invincible, who sired a dozen stakes-winners last season headed by three Group I winners – Caballus, Charm Stone one New Zealand trained 2YO colt Seize the Day.
I Am Invincible stands this spring at $220,000.
