Melbourne, January 23 – Snitzel’s little sister Viennese broke her maiden at Sandown on Wednesday with a professional performance that saw her cruise home by more than a length to win the restricted juvenile fillies event over 1000 metres.

Carrying the maroon and white colours of Darley Australia, Viennese jumped well from barrier two and enjoyed the run of the race before kicking clear for leading rider Corey Brown.

Resuming from a let-up of 11 weeks, the Lee Freedman trained filly showed good improvement from her only spring outing when sixth beaten two and a half lengths behind Hips Don’t Lie in a Listed race at Flemington.

“That Hips Don’t Lie form seemed pretty strong in the spring,” said Lee Freedman.

“This filly is only small, but she has good speed and is sensible, so there is every reason to think she could win a Black Type race this preparation.”

Viennese is no stranger to the limelight having been the top priced filly at the 2007 Magic Millions Yearling Sale when purchased by Ferguson Bloodstock on behalf of Darley Australia for $1.4 million from the draft of Yarraman Park.

Foaled and raised at Yarraman Park, Viennese was bred by Francis Naude and is by Redoute’s Choice from his grand producing mare Snippets’ Lass, who sadly passed away last spring after foaling a colt by Fastnet Rock, who has progressed nicely in the care of his adoptive nanny.

A stakes-winning daughter of outstanding sire Snippets, Snippets’ Lass has been a star for Yarraman at Magic Millions going back to 2004, when her Group One winner Snitzel was purchased from their draft for $260,000 by Gerald Ryan.

Ryan returned the next year in 2005 to purchase a More Than Ready (USA) filly from Snippets’ Lass that made $350,000 and gained Black Type when racing as Weiner.

In 2006, Wadham Park parted with $775,000 to secure a Royal Academy (USA) filly from Snippets’ Lass that is yet to race and then last year Viennese proved the dearest of her sex at the sale.

This year Yarraman will take a Fastnet Rock colt to the Gold Coast for Magic Millions from Snippets’ Lass.

“He’s probably a bit bigger than both Snitzel and Viennese although you’d expect that being by Fastnet Rock, who is a giant of a horse,” said Arthur Mitchell.

“The colt foal she had last spring is also doing really well now and he’s an absolute cracker.”

Yarraman Park have an outstanding draft of 23 yearlings heading to the 2008 Magic Millions Yearling Sale kicking off on March 24.
