Adelaide, March 10 – When two year-old filly Baby Corn took out the Listed SAJC Pewsey Vale Stakes over 1000 metres at Morphettville on Monday, she provided an instant pedigree update for her half-sister being offered at the 2009 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale by Yarraman Park.
The Lee Freedman trained filly won on debut at Moonee Valley back in October and has been placed three times since including a stakes-placing behind Rostova, so it was no surprise to see her break through and give her sire Exceed and Excel his fifth juvenile stakes-winner this season.
Baby Corn was always handy and fought on well in the straight to beat the Fastnet Rock filly Fast Talker, a $320,000 purchase from the Yarraman Park draft at the 2008 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
Retained to race by her breeders the Sperling family, Baby Corn is the second foal of former very good racemare Sweet Corn, a winner of seven races and $347,850 in prizemoney with a career highlight win in the Group Three VRC Matron Stakes.
By outstanding sire Scenic (IRE), Sweet Corn is from a stakes-winning mare in Corn Maizcay and her current yearling, a filly by Flying Spur has been catalogued as Lot 265 for the upcoming Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
The yearling filly is bred on the same cross as stakes-winner Baby Corn, both fillies by sons of champion sire Danehill (USA).
