September 22 – The official Sydney two year-olds trials at Randwick on Monday morning produced smart winners for Yarraman Park sires I Am Invincible, Magic Albert and Hinchinbrook, whose first runners are two year-olds.
A three-quarter brother by Fastnet Rock to Snitzel, Hinchinbrook was a good juvenile himself so is expected to make an impact this season and Harry Mitchell was well pleased with what he saw at Randwick.
The Gai Waterhouse trained Hinchinbrook gelding Brooklyn looked very professional in jumping fast and leading, before surging clear to win unchallenged by three lengths in 49.99 seconds for the 800 metres.
“I’m very encouraged with the results and Brooklyn did all that was asked of him given there was nothing to go with him and test him out,” said Mitchell.
“He did it very easy and if he pulls up well you would imagine he’d go to the Breeders Plate.”
A $150,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Yarraman Park draft, Brooklyn is from smart metro winner Believe ‘n Achieve and runs for a syndicate that includes Segenhoe Thoroughbreds and Yarraman Park.
Bred by Wicklow Lodge, Brooklyn is the first foal of his dam who was covered again by Hinchinbrook last spring.
David Vandyke also produced Hinchinbrook colt Brazen to finish on from back in the field for third in his heat.
“He looked a promising sort as well,” said Mitchell.
“Not really a two year-old type, but will be a nice horse next year.
“I’ve had a lot of positive feedback from the trainers that have Hinchinbrook’s, so we are looking forward to the season ahead.”
Winning Brazen’s trial was I Am Invincible colt Ideal Express from the stable of astute South Coast trainer Bede Murray.
He showed abundant natural pace for Tye Angland and won comfortably by half a length.
A $100,000 Inglis Classic purchase for Murray Livestock from the draft of Middlebrook Valley Lodge, Ideal Express was bred by Jacob Park Thoroughbreds and is from unraced O’Reilly mare Laughter, who comes from the family of Group I winners Card Shark and Avon Angel.
Magic Albert set a new benchmark in the sale ring earlier this year when his yearling colt from Eye for Fun fetched $750,000 for Fairview Park Stud at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale when secured by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa.
A half-brother to Golden Slipper winner Mossfun, he was named Mawahibb and given to Team Hawkes to train, as was his famous sibling, and stepped out at Randwick on Monday for the first time.
Mawahibb surged home late with a powerful finishing burst to win by three-quarters of a length in a very promising first outing.
I Am Invincible and Hinchinbrook are both fully booked and Magic Albert is still available at a fee of $13,750.
