Melbourne, November 15 – – A homebred for Shadwell, foaled and raised at Yarraman Park, three year-old Lonhro filly Wawail maintained her unbeaten record with a stylish win in the Listed MRC City Of Greater Dandenong Stakes at Sandown on Saturday. Prepared by David Hayes and Tom Dabernig and ridden by Michael Walker, Wawail led throughout and fought all the way to the line to win the 1400 metre contest by a head. “It was a very long last furlong, but to pick up the black type with a beautifully-bred filly like this was a big thrill for Sheikh Hamdan,” co-trainer David Hayes said. “I would have loved to have not paraded her before the race because I was embarrassed by how bad she looks but I think next preparation she’ll strengthen that little bit and get a coat and might be a very good little filly. “She was one of our best two-year-old’s with Afleet Esprit, but after she won on debut she chipped a knee so she missed most of her two-year-old year. “Looking at her, it might have been a bit of a blessing because she’s going to make a really nice four-year-old mare.” Wawail is the first living foal of former smart Redoute’s Choice filly El Daana, winner of the Group II VRC Edward Manifold Stakes. El Daana has a two year-old colt to follow by More Than Ready (USA) and then a yearling filly by Sepoy.
