Sydney, February 4 – Smart Catbird three year-old Buzzy Henry stepped up for his first try at a Saturday class race on the weekend and emerged a winner after leading throughout in the Class Four event over 1500 metres.
The speedy bay gelding from the Gai Waterhouse stable has always shown above average ability in trials and on the track but has had trouble converting that into race day results until now.
Breaking through for a hollow six length maiden win at his previous start on the Kensington track, Buzzy Henry went to Rosehill full of new found confidence and after controlling the race from the outset proved impossible to run down.
“It was a big jump in class from a maiden to a Saturday race and he’s handled it easily,” said Tania Rouse, assistant trainer to Gai Waterhouse.
“He’s always been quite a fiery, jazzy sort of a horse and is just beginning to settle down, so we’re only starting to see the best of him now.”
Buzzy Henry has won twice from six starts earning $70,400 for his large group of owners.
Bred and offered for sale by Yarraman Park, Buzzy Henry fetched $170,000 to the bid of Waterhouse at the 2005 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
He is a half-brother to the stakes-winner Stormcat Academy being from the good metropolitan winner Cotton Bay, whose yearling full brother to Buzzy Henry made $155,000 at Magic Millions this year with Grahame Begg the successful bidder.
Catbird’s star three year-old filly Catechuchu returned from a lucrative summer excursion to Perth, finishing a bold second to plunge horse Universal Queen in the Group Three VRC The Vanity at Moonee Valley on Saturday.
Ridden forward to lead from an outside barrier, Catechuchu stuck to her guns gamely in the straight, going down in the end to a filly that tested Group One winner Miss Andretti in a recent private trial.
The Catbird stock will be high on the list for most buyers at the 2007 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale starting this Saturday with 15 outstanding youngsters to choose from including Lot 392 to be offered by Yarraman Park, a brown colt from stakes-placed Fabled (NZ).
