Sydney, January 28 – Magic Albert filly Al’s Magic Miss is usually thereabouts in her races and found it was her turn to shine at Canterbury on Saturday.
The David Payne trained filly stripped fitter at her second run back from a spell and was able to improve on a good first up second to score a thrilling nose win for apprentice jockey Sam Clipperton.
“I didn’t think I’d won, but she had a real crack over the last little bit, so it was a very good win,” Clipperton said.
Bred and offered for sale by Yarraman Park, Al’s Magic Miss was a $100,000 purchase from the 2010 Magic Millions Yearling Sale and is a half-sister to stakes-placed Carlton Forward from stakes-placed Bianconi (USA) mare Carlton Ace, a half-sister to juvenile stakes-winner Carton Spirit.
She has been a good investment for connections, winning three times and finishing second twice from 12 starts earning more than $156,000 in prizemoney.
Fourth in the Group III ATC Silver Shadow Stakes and second in the Listed ATC Heritage Stakes in the spring, Al’s Magic Miss will no doubt be seeking further Black Type this preparation.
Her dam Carlton Ace has no yearling for the sales this year, but had a filly by Duporth last spring and is now in foal to Yarraman Park’s exciting young sire Hinchinbrook.
Al’s Magic Miss was one of two metropolitan winners for Magic Albert on Saturday with six year-old gelding Za Magic recapturing his best form to win at Doomben over 2200 metres.
Winner of the Group III Doomben Classic as a three year-old, Za Magic is now with Brian Smith after spending a long time on the sidelines through injury and seems to be on the way back judging by this three and a half length win.
Magic Albert covered 162 mares last year at a fee of $16,500 and was the eighth busiest sire in Australia for 2011.
