IT WAS billed as one of the races of the spring carnival — but in the end, Brazen Beau made it a Group 1 mismatch as he toyed with his three-year-old Coolmore Stud Stakes rivals.
Brazen Beau powered away with the $500,000 feature up the Flemington straight, winning by more than a length from stablemate Delectation ($51), with gutsy Kuro ($6.50) completing the Sydney trifecta.
Trainer Chris Waller won the Coolmore Stud Stakes last year with Zoustar, and adopted an almost identical blueprint with Brazen Beau, a colt who is sure to have plenty of studs now lining up for his services.
Runners charge up the outside section of the Flemington straight.
“He’s a very good colt, and I guess his only chink was when he came here first-up and I didn’t have him fit enough for the tough 1200m up the straight,’’ Waller said.
“I took him home, he won a good race (the Roman Consul), and we gave him plenty of time to prepare for this race.
“He’s a very, very good colt, and he’s beaten a very good field today — he’s beaten them fair and square.’’
Waller said Brazen Beau was a different colt to Zoustar, his $18 million champ who collected a $4 million bonus for winning last year’s dash.
“This horse is the complete package, just look at him, he’s well-balanced, he’s the perfect horse,’’ Waller said.
“Zoustar used to fire up a touch, he was a perfect gentleman on the ground, but in a race he was an animal. This horse is placid, but as you’ve just seen, he can turn it on as well.’’
Winning jockey Joao Moreira said of Brazen Beau: “He’s a lovely horse, he does everything right, he jumped brilliantly, we got cover behind them, I probably got going a bit early, but he put himself there. He crossed the line full of himself, he’s a very good horse who gave me such a great feel.

“His acceleration (is his best asset), he finished that race off so quickly, and that will make it hard all the time for the other horses.’’
As the connections of Brazen Beau celebrated, Rich Enuff, the $2.90 favourite, finished seventh, with jockey Michael Rodd admitting the tough Caulfield Guineas run had probably taken its toll.
Rubick also disappointed, but his chances were virtually blown during the week when he came up with the inside barrier, which forced him to deal with a strong headwind.
Brazen Beau came down the outside fence and looked strong on the line.
