Melbourne, August 16 – The Listed MRC Quezette Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday marked the return of several smart three year-old fillies, with victory going to Snitzel’s little sister Viennese, a $1.4 million purchase from the draft of Yarraman Park at the 2007 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
In the history books as the most expensive filly ever sold at the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Yearling Sale, the Lee Freedman trained filly travelled wide in the run but finished off with a great burst to surge past stablemate Woppitt in taking the 1100 metre event by nearly two lengths.
“I liked her win as she was three deep facing the breeze and finished off her race really well,” said Freedman.
“She’s improved a great deal and physically strengthened up, so if she can run 1600 metres she’d definitely be a Guineas filly.”
Secured by John Ferguson Bloodstock for Darley Australia, Viennese has done a fine job in winning three races and placing twice from just six starts earning $158,600 and as a stakes-winning full sister to a Group One winning young sire like Snitzel is worth every penny of her purchase price.
Foaled and raised at Yarraman Park, Viennese was bred by Francis Naude and is by champion sire Redoute’s Choice from the grand producing mare Snippets’ Lass, who sadly passed away last spring after foaling a colt by Fastnet Rock.
A stakes-winning daughter of outstanding sire Snippets, Snippets’ Lass has been a star for Yarraman at Magic Millions going back to 2004, when her Group One winner Snitzel was purchased from their draft for $260,000 by Gerald Ryan.
Ryan returned the next year in 2005 to purchase a More Than Ready (USA) filly from Snippets’ Lass that made $350,000 and gained Black Type when racing as Weiner.
In 2006, Wadham Park parted with $775,000 to secure a Royal Academy (USA) filly from Snippets’ Lass, who is also a winner as Royal Snippets and then last year Viennese proved the dearest of her sex at the sale.
