Sydney, May 17 – Quality Magic Albert four year-old Al Be Nimble was rewarded for his recent consistency with an overdue victory in the Listed STC Civic Stakes over 1400 metres at Rosehill on Saturday.

Second at his two previous starts in Listed company, Al Be Nimble was taken back in the field by Nash Rawiller and allowed to find his feet before powering home with a withering finish to defeat Certain Magic by a long neck.

“It was a really good performance,” Rawiller said.

“The genuinely run handicaps are what he’s looking for and he got that today. In the spring a race like the Emirates on the last day of the Flemington carnival might not be beyond him.”

Trained at Kembla by Gwenda Markwell, Al Be Nimble has the impressive record of six wins and five seconds from 13 starts, his prizemoney soaring to within a whisker of $300,000.

Retained to race by his breeders, Al Be Nimble is from a Danehill mare in the imported Nimble (IRE), who was purchased last year by Yarraman Park in partnership with Denis Wilton and is now back in foal to Magic Albert.

Nimble (IRE) was a minor winner in Italy at 1600 metres and was also fourth in a Listed event for fillies in England at Newbury. She comes from a prolific Black Type European family and Al Be Nimble is her only foal to race.

Magic Albert is the sire of 35 winners this season and covered 146 mares last spring at $16,500, his fee set to remain the same this spring.
