Brisbane, July 19 – The Doomben program on Wednesday featured a winning double for horses raised and sold by Yarraman Park, with two year-old Firedrake scoring an all the way win, followed later in the day by the hugely impressive Morning Colours.
A speedy chestnut by Golden Slipper winner Catbird, Firedrake made no mistakes in leading throughout to post his first win for the Gillian Heinrich stable in the 1110 metre maiden for juvenile colts and geldings.
The victory was a deserved one for Firedrake, who had finished second at his four previous starts.
Firedrake was secured by Heinrich Bloodstock for $65,000 from the Yarraman Park draft at the 2006 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale and is the fourth foal of smart stakes-winning mare Flickering Fire.
A Listed winner of seven races and $223,965 in prizemoney, the daughter of Forest Glow (USA) also split high-class mares Camino Rose and Staging when second in the Group Two QTC Queen of the Turf Stakes, a race now upgraded to Group One status.
Flickering Fire is now the dam of two metropolitan winners, with Firedrake joining his full sister Simurgh, a winner at Canterbury back in May for Grahame Begg.
Flickering Fire is due to foal this spring to Yarraman’s highly respected newcomer Foreplay, who will stand his second season at a fee of $13,200.
Improving four year-old Morning Colours brought up the Yarraman double when he thrashed his opposition to win the Class Four event over 1350 metres by four lengths.
In doing so, the Bryan Guy trained galloper made it three wins in succession taking his overall record to five wins and three placings from 14 starts.
By former shuttle sire Marju (IRE) from the Military Plume mare Military Call, Morning Colours is a half-brother to this season’s Group Two placed three year-old Magic Jet, a son of Magic Albert.
Morning Colours was purchased by Keiran Moore Bloodstock from the Yarraman draft at the 2004 Magic Millions Yearling Sale for $130,000 and his dam is due to foal to Magic Albert again this spring after producing a Catbird filly last year.
