Melbourne, November 1 – Improving Johannesburg (USA) colt Jawds broke his maiden at Seymour on Thursday over 1600 metres with a gutsy performance to claim a narrow victory.
Sent out favourite for his fourth race start, Jawds was sporting blinkers for the first time and they may have helped him focus at the finish as he dug deep to beat Matamore by half a neck with three lengths back to the third place-getter.
Prepared by Robert Smerdon, Jawds was secured from the Yarraman draft at the 2006 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $170,000 and is the fifth foal of the Group One placed mare Regal Sashay.
Jawds was foaled and raised at Yarraman for successful breeder Tim Hughes, although he has since parted company with Regal Sashay selling her under the Yarraman banner at the 2006 Inglis Broodmare Sale for $65,000.
Jawds is one of a string of recent winners sold by Yarraman Park with several due to contest races at Flemington on Derby Day including Here de Angels, Flash’n Dough and Moment of Truth.
