Sydney, January 23 – Randwick trainer David Payne has been on fire since the start of December and captured another race at Randwick on Wednesday with Kettledrum, a $120,000 purchase from the draft of Yarraman Park at the 2006 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale.
Having just his second race start, Kettledrum stormed home to win the 1550 metre maiden on the Kensington track by a short neck in an encouraging performance.
Beaten less than two lengths when fifth on debut over 1300 metres at the same track on January 9, he appreciated the step up in distance and will pay to follow.
Bred and offered for sale by Yarraman Park, Kettledrum is a half-brother to Caulfield Guineas winner Econsul being from the Group One placed Centaine mare Gypsy Soul, who died prematurely in November of 2006.
Her last foal for Yarraman was a filly by Exceed and Excel that was sold at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale last year for $235,000 with Michael Flannery the successful bidder.
