A troubled fifth behind Pisces when on debut on a heavy track at Newcastle, Hellbent two year-old filly Aemelius reversed that decision emphatically when coming from last to break her maiden in Saturday’s open juvenile handicap at Randwick over 1200m.
Appreciating the ice-cold ride of Alysha Collett, the Annabel Neasham-trained filly rocketed down the centre of the track to win by nearly a length on the line.

“We were confident she would take a step forward. The draw was a concern, but Alysha summed it up very quickly. Gave her a great ride and was strong late,” stable representative Rob Archibald said.
“She’s a beautiful filly with a really nice temperament. She is a smart filly in the making.”
A half-sister to the ill-fated Group III winner Brave Mead and stakes-winner Solemn, Aemelius was a $130,000 purchase for Triple Crown Syndications from the Attunga Stud draft at the 2022 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale.
She is the eighth winner for the metropolitan winning Galileo mare Mead, a half-sister to Group I winner La Volta, the grand-dam of Group I winner Mighty Boss.
Mead was back at Yarraman Park last spring to be covered by Brave Mead’s sire Brave Smash.
Aemelius was one of four winners on Saturday for Hellbent, who is on track for his best ever season having sired the winners of nearly $10million in earnings with star performers Group I winning mares Magic Time and Benedetta.
