Pint sized Magic Albert sprinter Alberto Magic returned from a spell to score a brilliant victory in the Group III ATC Maurice McCarten Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday breaking the race record for the 1100 metre sprint. Sent out in top order by Allan Denham with two barrier trials under his belt, Alberto Magic was perfectly ridden by Jason Collett to snatch a short head win. “He had two good barrier trials leading up to it,” Denham said. “He’s really a class six horse in a Group III so he’s done a pretty good job. “I’ll just get him home and see how he pulls up. He’s only small so he can’t carry a lot of weight.” Collett maintained his perfect record aboard Alberto Magic after scoring twice previously on him during his last campaign. “He looked a picture in the yard, barely sweated up behind the barriers and I was pretty confident with what I saw,” Collett said. “On the good track he was a touch outpaced early but I didn’t bother touching the bridle as he’s renowned for overdoing it in front.” Alberto Magic’s time of 1.03.45 broke the race record previously set by Kencella in 2014. Retained to race by his breeder, Alberto Magic has the impressive record of seven wins from 11 starts with prizemoney topping $263,000. He is the second foal and first winner for Red Feather, a winning daughter of former flying filly Mother Duck, who won nine races highlighted by the Group III AJC Gimcrack Stakes. The Mother Duck family has enjoyed plenty of success in recent years to produce stakes-winners such as Ladys Angel, Anatina, Pricked, Miss Bux and Atomic. Alberto Magic is the 22nd stakes-winner for Yarraman Park stalwart Magic Albert, who covered his dam Red Feather again last spring.
