Brisbane, August 1 – Talented Magic Albert sprinter Albert the Fat confirmed his standing as one of the most promising horses in Queensland when he careered away to win the quality event over 1200 metres at Doomben on Saturday by nearly three lengths.

Ridden quietly from an outside gate in the early stages by Brad Pengelly, the Eden Petrie trained Albert the Fat accelerated quickly in the straight to clock a slick 1:09.15 as a short priced favourite.

“He’s definitely up to going to Sydney," Pengelly said after the race.

"He’s racing on raw ability at the moment and he’s maturing all the time.

"He put the issue beyond doubt at the 200 metres but a lot of the credit goes to Eden, who was under a lot of pressure to get him ready for last month’s Ramornie but a few things went wrong."

All going well, Albert The Fat will head down to Sydney for the Listed AJC Show County Handicap (1200m) at Randwick on August 22 and Group Two Theo Marks Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on September 12.

Depending on his performances, a tilt at the Melbourne spring carnival may not be out of the question for the handsome chestnut who has now won nine of 15 starts and more than $250,000 in prizemoney.

A $40,000 purchase for Wadham Park from the draft of Rheinwood Pastoral during Session Five at the 2006 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Albert the Fat is from the Bureaucracy mare Alemar, a full sister to stakes-placed Mastery.

Alemar produced a full brother to Albert the Fat last year and was covered again by Magic Albert so is expecting another full sibling this spring.
