Magic Albert was at it again on Wednesday with yet another new winner and he is now the sire of 13 (2 in NZ) to be precise, giving him a clear lead on the first season sires table in terms of individual winners.
His latest winner comes courtesy of the Neil Strong trained colt Magi Joy, who ploughed through heavy conditions at Doomben to record his first win in the two-year old maiden at any old price.
Purchased by Strong for $38,000 from the draft of Craigow Stud at the 2005 Magic Millions Premier Yearling Sale in March, Magi Joy is the second foal of juvenile metropolitan winner La Tache, a daughter of the Storm Bird shuttle Mukaddamah (USA).
Magic Albert is finishing the season with a surge of winners, his stock seeming to revel in the frequently wet track conditions and probably benefiting from that little bit of additional maturity.
The Yarraman Park based sire is out to emulate the performance of his Yarraman stable-mate Catbird who was also the leading Australian first season sire in terms of individual winners during the 2003/2004 season, when he racked up 15 winners, but no stakes-winners.
Catbird has since proven his worth as a sire of stakes horses, this season credited with six stakes-winners and progeny earnings of over $3.2 million.
Standing at a fee of $11,000, Magic Albert looks sensational value this spring, particularly if his fortunes continue to mirror that of Catbird.
