Wyong, July 24 – When he gets to the front, he’s a tough horse to catch as was the case at Wyong on Tuesday for consistent three year-old gelding Number One Gun, an $85,000 purchase for Champion Thoroughbreds from the Yarraman Park draft at the 2010 MM National Yearling Sale.
Prepared by John O’Shea, Number One Gun was on the quick back-up having been successful at the metropolitan meeting at Gosford last Wednesday, but his trainer was always confident the task would be to his liking.
In a pre-race interview on TVN, O’Shea explained that the horse was a gross doer and he had long had the thought to back him up when the right race presented itself and his judgement was vindicated.
Again carrying a big weight of 60.5 kg, even after a 2kg claim for Chad Schofield, Number One Gun relished the wet conditions to bounce quickly to the lead and then kept up a good gallop to the line to win the 1200 metre Benchmark 70 event by more than a length.
“He’s a big powerful horse, who enjoys his racing and he held them off strongly at the finish,” Schofield said.
