Celebrated broodmare Oceanfast produced a full brother to champion filly Alinghi at Yarraman Park Stud on the weekend, with mother and son reported to be in excellent health.

“He’s a lovely colt, not unlike the filly we sold at Easter this year in that he has similar markings and the same head,” said a delighted Arthur Mitchell.

“We’re pleased to get a colt as she’s had a number of fillies now by Encosta de Lago and it also means we can keep his full sister who is now a yearling.”

Eleven-year old Oceanfast is the dam of stakes-placed Slice of Paradise and the freakishly good filly Alinghi, who won 11 races and $3.5 million including Group One victories in the VRC Newmarket Handicap, MRC 1000 Guineas, MRC Blue Diamond Stakes and SAJC Robert Sangster Stakes.

Yarraman Park sold a yearling full sister to Alinghi at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale earlier this year for an Australasian record price of $2.6 million.

Purchased by renowned Irish bloodstock agent Demi O’Byrne the glamour filly is now in work with Lee Freedman, who also guided the stellar career of Alinghi.

“She’s been down with Lee for quite some time now, although she had a bit of a cold so they backed off her for a couple of weeks. She’s done everything right though, and there is a real chance we could see her up and running before Christmas, as Alinghi did when winning the Debutante as a spring two-year old,” said Mitchell.

Oceanfast will be covered by Australia’s premier sire Redoute’s Choice at Arrowfield Stud in the next few weeks.

“She’s been to Encosta de Lago six times now and we thought she was due for a change. As the dam of a $2.6 million yearling and a champion performer in Alinghi she has certainly earned her place with the leading sire in the country,” added Mitchell.
