Brisbane, May 14 – Promising Encosta de Lago filly Apercu scored an important Black Type success when she arrived in the last few strides to beat Kingda Ka by a long head in the Listed BTC Golden Stakes over 1200 metres at Doomben on Saturday.

Having her fifth start for astute conditioner Clarry Conners, Apercu settled back in the field before weaving between runners under a brilliant ride from Darren Beadman to post her first win.

Placed twice previously, as well as running fourth in a Listed event at Flemington behind Royal Asscher last spring, Apercu appreciated the good surface and appeals as the type of filly to improve over the longer journeys.

Bred by Tim Hughes and offered for sale by Yarraman Park at the 2006 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Apercu made $470,000to the bid of Conners acting for his client Dr Edmund Bateman.

Apercu is the third foal of stakes-placed Zabeel mare Making Fey (NZ), a half-sister to Group Two winning stayer Big Barron from the family of Group One winners Global News, Ivory’s Irish, Alynda, Penny Gem, Hit the Roof and Brawny Spirit.

Yarraman Park sold the current yearling filly by Exceed and Excel from Making Fey (NZ) for $125,000 at the 2007 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling to Star Thoroughbreds.

Making Fey (NZ) produced a Fastnet Rock colt last spring and is back in foal to him again.
