Perth/Brisbane, December 4 – Golden Slipper winner Catbird played a hand in Black Type events on opposite sides of the country on Saturday when top class filly Catechuchu made a winning debut in Perth, while consistent mares Mimidae and Coincidental filled the minor placings in the Listed mares event at Eagle Farm.
The David Hayes trained Catechuchu carried her recent good Melbourne form across the Nullarbor to Ascot, where she scored a dominant win in the Group Three WATC Champion Fillies Stakes over 1600 metres.
Sent out a raging hot favourite from barrier one with hometown hero Damien Oliver in the saddle, the powerful bay did not disappoint in cruising home to win by more than a length in the slick time of 1:35.01.
Purchased by renowned judge Mark Pilkington for $50,000 from the draft of Collingrove Stud at the 2005 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Catechuchu has proven to be a sensational investment for her large group of owners.
The three-year old daughter of Catbird has won three races and placed three times earning $356,500 and with a Group Three win on her resume has become a most valuable broodmare prospect.
Catechuchu is from the Dahar (USA) mare Noble Fleur, a half-sister to Group Three winner Toy Image and stakes-winner / producer Lucky Witch.
Her full sister is among 31 Catbird yearlings catalogued for the 2007 Magic Millions Yearling Sale (January (11 –19).
Speedy John O’Shea trained mare Mimidae landed her first Black Type placing with a fighting second in the Listed QTC Carlton Classic behind fast finishing Love and Money, with another Catbird mare Coincidental in third place.
Raced by Luskin Park Stud and partners, Mimidae has won four of 14 starts earning $126,880 and has positively blossomed this preparation.
A $120,000 purchase from the draft of Stratheden Stud at the 2004 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, she is the fifth foal of the Caerleon mare Sufuf (GB) (now deceased), a daughter of Sir Tristram (IRE) stakes-winner Deira.
It was also first Black Type for Coincidental, a most consistent five-year old from the Alan Bailey stable with earnings of $208,800.
A $65,000 purchase from the draft of Willow Park Stud as agent at the 2003 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Coincidental is the second foal of the Prego (IRE) mare Capishe, a full sister to outstanding four-time Group One winner Primacy.
