A homebred for Shadwell, foaled and raised at Yarraman Park, three year-old Lonhro filly Wawail upped the ante at Flemington on Saturday when capturing the Group II VRC Kewney Stakes.

Prepared by David Hayes and Tom Dabernig and ridden by Michael Walker, Wawail won a Listed race at the end of the spring, but has come back bigger and better this preparation.

She travelled well in the field for Walker and exploded to the front passing the furlong when a split appeared between runners.

Wawail won by half a length over talented Street Cry (IRE) filly Sabatini, who went close to giving Alpara Lodge a Black Type double as they claimed Listed win earlier in the day with Pittsburgh Flyer.

“Barriers probably told the tale,” said David Hayes.

“We got the dream run and the other filly (Sabatini) got too far back.

“She’s won five out of six and probably should have been six out of six, so there are some nice races over the carnival for her.”

Destined to race in Dubai next season, Wawail has now won five from six starts earning just shy of $300,000 in prizemoney.

She is the first living foal of former smart Redoute’s Choice filly El Daana, winner of the Group II VRC Edward Manifold Stakes.

El Daana has a two year-old colt to follow by More Than Ready (USA), a yearling filly by Sepoy and was covered by Lonhro again last year.
