A pair of Shadwell Stud bred, Yarraman Park foaled gallopers caught the eye when winning at Champ De Mars on Sunday.
Street Cry’s gelded son Alshibaa (pictured above) made it back to back Maiden Cup (local G1) wins when saluting in Sunday’s Mauritian feature, while fellow Australian bred Afdeek won over 1400m earlier on the card.
The victory of the Roi Joorawon-ridden Alshibaa to record back to back Maiden Cup wins, only the fourth in history behind Tahara Maid, Lines Of Power and Enaad, gave gelding a significant points lead in the Stayer’s Championship, having already won the first two rounds of the championship, the G3 Winter Stakes and the G2 Golden Trophy.
Both geldings had begun their racing careers with Mike de Kock in South Africa, with Alshibaa capturing three of his nine South African starts, while Afdeek finished second in each of his only three starts.
Both Alshibaa and Afdeek (pictured below) now race for trainer Ricky Maingard, with Alshibaa having won eight starts in Mauritius and Afdeek scoring nine times on “The Island”.
Unsurprisingly, both geldings sport top-class pedigrees. Not only is Alshibaa a son of Darley’s outstanding but ill-fated sire Street Cry, he is out of the winning Redoute’s Choice mare Asheerah.
Herself a daughter of Singspiel’s G1 winning daughter Rewaaya, Asheerah is a sister in blood to Redoute’s Choice’s top class sire son Not A Single Doubt, a sire of an impressive 15 individual G1 winners including G1 Golden Slipper winner Farnan as well as exiting you sire Extreme Choice, who is in turn the sire of last season’s G1 Golden Slipper winner Stay Inside.
By Darley’s veteran champion sire Exceed And Excel, Afdeek hails from the same family as Alshibaa, with other notable members of this family including the ill-fated G1 Cape Derby winner Ertijaal (also trained by de Kock), G1 BTC Doomben Cup winner Sense Of Occasion, and young Coolmore Australia sire, and dual G1 winning two-year-old, King’s Legacy (Redoute’s Choice).
