Melbourne, December 20 – Fastnet Rock has produced plenty of smart types this season, but few more impressive than the Mark Kavanagh trained colt We’re Gonna Rock, who scored a powerful debut win at Flemington on Saturday.
Well in the market, despite taking on a smart field including previously unbeaten Marconi and solid types Winter King and Tariks, We’re Gonna Rock stamped himself as a colt of serious potential in rocketing home from last to win the 1000 metre Ratings 82 event by more than a length.
The powerhouse colt clocked 56.94 seconds for the journey and an amazing 31.82 seconds into a head wind for the last 600 metres with Michael Rodd in the saddle.
“Obviously his first start up the straight having a good look round and he’s a bit of a dopey bloke," said Rodd.
"Once I gave him a crack around the arse he picked up and he felt enormous underneath me.
"I knew he could get to them, but it was a worry to go past them."
Go past them he did, the performance impressing many good judges who expect We’re Gonna Rock to be a real autumn star.
“I might give him another one and then ease him up", said trainer Mark Kavanagh.
"He might be a Guineas horse in the Autumn."
A $180,000 purchase for his trainer from the Yarraman Park draft at the 2008 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, We’re Gonna Rock is the first foal of the Dehere (USA) mare Harrow, a half-sister to Group One winners Bluebird the Word and Porto Roca.
