Hinchinbrook filly Edge Away, labelled the smallest in the stable of her trainer Gerald Ryan, finally had things go her way to break the ice at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
Placed at six of her previous eight starts, Edge Away was down the track at her most recent run in a stakes race in Doomben on November 28, but found the drop back to maiden class to her liking.
Perfectly ridden by Lester Grace from gate one, she covered no ground and surged through along the inside late to score a well-deserved half lengths victory in the 1100 metre maiden.
“She has good form behind some nice horses,” said Gerald Ryan.
“She wasn’t quite up to the stakes race in Brisbane, but I always thought this was a perfect race for her.
“She’s the smallest horse in my stable and probably the smallest horse here today, but she does one thing, which is to try her little heart out.”
Retained to race by her breeders, Edge Away was foaled and raised at Yarraman Park.
She is the first foal of stakes-winning Dehere (USA) mare Devoirs, a daughter of Group II winner Velasco.
Edge Away is the latest winner for Australia’s leading Second Season Sire Hinchinbrook, who has 21 entries for the 2016 Magic Millions.
