Sydney, January 9 – Talented gelding Lorne Dancer turned in arguably the run of the day when resuming from a spell to finish second at Randwick on Boxing Day under 64 kg and ran right up to that form in scoring a bold victory at the same venue on Saturday.

The Gai Waterhouse trained five year-old son of Danehill Dancer (IRE) mustered speed quickly for apprentice rider Kody Nestor, surging forward to lead and then defying all challengers in the straight to win the Benchmark 95 event over 1600 metre by a length under 58.5 kg.

“You have to be proud of a horse like him that can carry such a big weight and win, also he’s overcome a severe injury in a slab fracture that had him out for more than twelve months, so it was a tremendous effort,” said Robyn Hartney, Racing Manager for Gai Waterhouse.

Before breaking down in October 2008, Lorne Dancer had won four races straight culminating in wins in the Group Three AJC Craven Plate and Listed Tattersalls Club Cup, his overall record now eight wins and five placings from 15 starts with prizemoney nearing $400,000.

A $70,000 purchase for his trainer from the Yarraman Park draft at the 2007 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Lorne Dancer is one of five winners for stakes-placed Fabled (NZ), whose daughter Dashkova is the dam of last season’s Group Two winning juvenile Indian Ocean.
