Melbourne, December 11 – A homebred for Shadwell, foaled and raised at Yarraman Park, two year-old Lonhro filly Wawail opened her account with a debut win at Caulfield on Wednesday.

Prepared by David Hayes and ridden by Chad Schofield, Wawail had to battle driving rain and slippery conditions, but proved too good in taking the 1000 metre scamper by three-quarters of a length.

“She bounced well and she travelled well outside the leader. It stopped before we straightened and that left a green two-year-old having her first start in front a long way from home,” said Schofield.

“She was waiting for them, so for that reason, there was even more credit to the win.”

Wawail is the first living foal of former smart Redoute’s Chocie filly El Daana, winner of the Group II VRC Edward Manifold Stakes.

El Daana has a yearling colt to follow by More Than Ready (USA) and produced a filly foal by Sepoy this spring.
