It’s often said yearling buyers drill for oil where they have found it before, and that rang true when BK Racing purchased a colt by Hellbent for $400,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale on Sunday.
Back in 2024, BK Racing purchased a Hellbent filly at Inglis Classic from Riverstone Lodge, and under the care of Brad Widdup, she has gone on to become Savvy Hallie.
Multiple Group placed at two and then a brilliant winner of the G2 ATC Silver Shadow Stakes last spring, Savvy Hallie has already banked over $670,000 in prizemoney, and a portion of that was reinvested on Sunday.
BK Racing partnered with Gary Portelli to buy the Riverstone Lodge consigned Hellbent colt from Miramare to the delight of Riverstone Lodge’s Nick Taylor.
“It’s an amazing result,’’ Taylor said.
“He’s always been a quality animal, and there was a temptation to head to the Gold Coast, but we’ve always had really good success at Inglis Classic. After last year, I was determined to bring a really nice horse to the sale because, geez, you guys get a lot of buyers here.”
“There’s been a lot of foot traffic and for us, a busier sale than the Gold Coast, and so many different faces, buyers at all sorts of levels were coming through, and this colt just gathered momentum as the week went on.”
“To get a result like this is just incredible, it’s massive for us.’’
Ben Vassallo of BK Racing was happy with his purchase.
“I think he’ll be up and going early and that’s very attractive to buyers, which made him so popular and that final bid was going to bottom us right out; thankfully, the others didn’t bid again,” he said.
“We’ve bought a very good horse off the same farm by the same stallion at this same Classic Sale in Savvy Hallie, which is a G2 winner for us already, which helps a lot when you’re making a decision to spend this much money. We’re very excited that this is the right horse for us.’’
The highest-priced colt sold on Sunday, he has an intriguing pedigree and is bred for speed with a triple cross of Green Desert, and his dam Miramare is a sister to G1-winning sprinter Shamexpress, sire of the world’s best sprinter Ka Ying Rising.
The family had another big pedigree update last year when G1 MRC Caulfield Guineas winner Autumn Boy also popped onto the page.
Hellbent continues a phenomenal 2026 sales season, coming off the back of a red-hot Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale where he achieved a 100% clearance rate with a top price of $600,000 from Widden’s draft.
