Sydney, January 23 – Consistent Catbird mare Purrpurrlena finally broke through for a well deserved win, braving the sweltering conditions at Rosehill on Saturday to overpower Blood Angel in the Benchmark 75 event for mares over 1200 metres.

The Grahame Begg trained mare had been thereabouts in her first four runs back this campaign before finishing down the track at her previous run at Randwick on January 9.

“She was wide all the way that day from an outside gate and it was very warm, so she knew she’d had a run,” explained Grahame Begg.

“We took her home and she freshened up nicely, so we hoped things would go her way today.

“She’s a real handful to train, getting her on and off the track, so it’s a credit to all the staff that she’s been able to win.”

Purrpurrlena has won three races and placed four times from 13 starts earning $130,690 for her connections.

A $155,000 purchase from the Yarraman Park draft at the 2007 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Purrpurrlena was also bred by Yarraman and is a full sister to Group Two placed sprinter Star Cat being from the former smart stakes-winner Magdalena.

Magdalena has no yearling for the sales this year, but did produce a filly by Trotamondo (Chi) last spring.
