Melbourne, January 11 – Talented Catbird filly Burgeis ran right up to her Golden Slipper packed pedigree when she burst away from her rivals to win in dazzling fashion at Moonee Valley on Friday night.
Backed into favouritism, the Tony Vasil trained Burgeis sat off the speed and zoomed around the leaders in the straight opening up to win the 1000 metre event by four and a quarter lengths over the General Nediym filly Aspire and recent Exceed and Excel winner Solar Strike.
Racing in the familiar colours of Elvstroem and Haradasun, Burgeis is raced by the Arch of Gold Syndicate managed by Frank Tagg.
She was purchased by Aquanita Racing for $160,000 at the 2007 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Lustre Lodge and was their only entry in the sale, also the only entry for her Golden Slipper winning sire Catbird.
Burgeis is the fourth foal of the good metropolitan winner Grand Performance, a half-sister by Palace Music (USA) to Golden Slipper winner and promising young sire Stratum.
The Golden Slipper connection does not end there as her next two dams Bourgeois and Brave New World are by Luskin Star and Vain respectively, two of the finest Golden Slipper winners in the history of the race.
Is it any wonder Burgeis can jump and run!
The win of Burgeis capped a big week for ill-fated Catbird, who is the Breednet Sire of the Week after producing six winners in the seven-day period ending Wednesday January 9, not to mention a winner at Sha Tin last Sunday.
Catbird died prematurely at Yarraman Park last year and the foals on the ground will sadly be his last.
